Playing music is a balancing act between two very different mindsets: a creative/emotive side and an structured/knowledge-based side. A solid musician must know what to play in what situation and how to play those parts. While at the same time, one must be able to let themselves go and be guided by the moment. This approach to music is the healthiest approach in my opinion, and it is what I strive to teach every time I’m with a student. I became very frustrated with musical academia over the years by it being too focused on the analytic side and not the creative/intuitive side of music. So I attempt to take care to teach a broad and balanced spectrum of ALL the elements that make up a good musician.

I took electric lessons for about 6 years, and then upright lessons following that for about 4. I have had the opportunity to study with Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Chuck Rainey, Bill Dickens, and more when I got to go to two of Victor Wooten’s bass/nature camps. I studied at the Conservatory of Music at UMKC as a double major in Bass Performance and Composition. I am proficient in all western theory and almost any technique on bass.

I have taught electric bass lessons for about 6 years now. I have played electric bass for a little over 13 years, and upright bass for about 7. I’m a full-time working musician. I teach everyone from beginners all the way to advanced, and students of all ages. I’m comfortable teaching pretty much any style you are interested in, but my personal focus is in jazz, funk, fusion, and groove based music.

So if you’re in the greater Kansas City area and are interested in bass for the first time, or are wanting to take it up a notch please give me a call. My number is (913) 244-4310. My studio is currently located at Guitar Dock at 95th and Quivira. I also teach out of my home occasionally which is located in Mission Kansas.

Also, if you’d like to hear me play with my current band, Mouth (original improvised dance, funk, fusion music), check out abandcalledmouth.com.

Thanks,
